Testo teatrale di grande impatto scritto da Fabre nel 1980: interpretato dall’attrice spagnola Ivette Codina, questo ipnotico assolo si addentra nella mente di un individuo ipersensibile spinto al limite dai suoni, dalle immagini e dalle sensazioni del mondo che lo circonda. In parte confessione, in parte sogno febbrile, lo spettacolo si snoda come un torrente di pensieri, ricordi e percezioni. Ogni sussurro diventa un disturbo, ogni dettaglio un’ossessione. Ascoltare e vedere diventano atti di sopravvivenza. Con il suo linguaggio poetico, le ripetizioni ritmiche e le immagini suggestive, il testo esplora il fragile confine tra realtà e illusione, autenticità e imitazione. La vulnerabilità diventa forza, la sensibilità diventa resistenza. Nel corso dell’opera il burro funge da soggetto ricorrente. Ricco, sensuale e deperibile, richiama alla mente una sostanza storicamente impiegata dagli alchimisti e successivamente adottata dall’artista Joseph Beuys, per il quale il grasso incarnava trasformazione, energia e sopravvivenza. Un tempo consumato in abbondanza prima della Quaresima, evoca un mondo sospeso tra l’indulgenza e la rinuncia, l’eccesso e la scomparsa. Qui, il burro diventa un fragile monumento a tutto ciò che inevitabilmente si scioglie: il piacere, la bellezza e l’illusione della permanenza. Who Shall Speak My Thought? è un’ode a coloro che provano emozioni troppo intense, sentono troppo, vedono troppo e che continuano a cercare la bellezza e il significato nel caos travolgente dell’esistenza.

Who Shall Speak My Thought? is a haunting theatre text written by Jan Fabre in 1980. Performed by the Spanish actress Ivette Codina, this hypnotic solo plunges into the mind of a hypersensitive individual driven to the edge by the sounds, images, and sensations of the world around them. Part confession, part fever dream, the performance unfolds as a torrent of thoughts, memories, and perceptions. Every whisper becomes a disturbance, every detail an obsession. Listening and seeing become acts of survival. With its poetic language, rhythmic repetitions, and striking imagery, the text explores the fragile boundary between reality and illusion, authenticity and imitation. Vulnerability becomes strength. Sensitivity becomes resistance. Throughout the performance, butter serves as a recurring motif. Rich, sensual, and perishable, it recalls a substance historically employed by alchemists and later embraced by the artist Joseph Beuys, for whom fat embodied transformation, energy, and survival. Once consumed in abundance before Lent, it evokes a world suspended between indulgence and renunciation, excess and disappearance. Here, butter becomes a fragile monument to all that inevitably melts away: pleasure, beauty, and the illusion of permanence. Who Shall Speak My Thought? is an ode to those who feel too much, hear too much, see too much and who continue to search for beauty and meaning within the overwhelming chaos of existence.
