I am a mistake è un testo teatrale scritto da Jan Fabre nel 1988. È un manifesto che equivale quasi a una professione di fede dell’artista. La schietta confessione “I sono un errore” è come un mantra che si ripete e divide; in questo testo la voce tesse la sua rete di confessioni e significati, a volte come metafora di un artista, a volte in tono di protesta. Non sorprende che questo brano sia dedicato al cineasta sovversivo (ed entomologo dilettante) Luis Buñuel e ad Antonin Artaud. Io sono un errore perché plasmo la mia vita e il mio lavoro in modo organico, secondo il mio giudizio, senza preoccuparmi di ciò che si dovrebbe fare o dire”, questa è la franca sintesi del personaggio sulla sua visione del mondo ed è la prima persona a sapere che c’è un prezzo da pagare: quello della graduale autodistruzione.

“Io sono un errore” è una performance dark che non ha i toni barocchi ai quali Fabre ci ha abituato negli ultimi anni e che tocca corde essenziali e profonde: la solitudine, l’inadeguatezza nei confronti delle aspettative altrui e del mondo, la libertà personale, la malattia, il vizio, la morte, resi da Urcioli con voce sfidante, urla, sospiri, emessi da un corpo giovane sul punto di dissolversi. I am a mistake is a theatre text written by Jan Fabre in 1988. It is a manifest that amounts almost to a profession of faith by the artist. The blunt confession ‘I am a mistake’ is like a mantra that repeats and divides; the voice in this text weaves his web of confessions and meanings, sometimes as a metaphor of an artist sometimes in a protesting tone. It comes as no surprise that this piece is dedicated to the subversive film-maker (and amateur entomologist) Luis Buñuel and to Antonin Artaud. ‘I am a mistake because I shape my life and work organically in accordance with my own judgement with no concern for what one ought to do or say’, this is the character’s frank summary of her world view and she is the first person to know that there is a price to be paid: that of gradual self-destruction.

Irene Urciuoli was born in Italy in 1992. She trained as an actress, studying under gipeto and graduating from the Accademia dei Filodrammatici in Milan. In 2018, she joined Troubleyn/Jan Fabre, performing in Belgian Rules/Belgium Rules and Mount Olympus. To glorify the cult of tragedy – a 24 hour performance which premiered in New York in November of the same year. More recently, she appeared in The Fluid Force of Love (2021) and is currently featured in Troubleyn/Jan Fabre’s latest eight-hour production, Peak Mytikas (On the Top of Mount Olympus) (2023). In addition, she is on tour with two solo performances created for her by Troubleyn/Jan Fabre: Simona, the Gangster of Art (2022), performed in English, French, and Italian, and Io sono un errore | I Am a Mistake (2024), performed in Italian. Beyond performing, Irene is also a dedicated teacher and a member of the Jan Fabre Teaching Group, training the next generation of performers.
